Insurance Protection for Health Care Facilities

Choosing the right insurance for Health Care Facilities

There are many factors to consider when choosing insurance coverage for your hospital, nursing home or aged care home.

Health Care Facilities are facing increasingly high risks, from the devastating potential effects of fire, to medical/non-medical professional negligence or malpractice.

Catholic Health Care Facilities have many responsibilities:

  • to care for the sick and infirm,
  • to care for the occupational health and safety needs of doctors, nurses, orderlies and other staff,
  • to provide appropriate safe facilities for medical procedures and patient care.

Each of these responsibilities may also invite potential losses or liabilities that may require insurance coverage.

Catholic Church Insurances Limited has been providing insurance to Catholic organisations since 1911. Over that time we have built up a comprehensive knowledge of the special needs of Catholic hospitals, nursing homes and aged care homes.

Catholic Church Insurances Limited will not only provide you with assistance and advice on insurance products, we will also actively support you with advice on risk management techniques to minimise potential losses. This is particularly important for risks which you choose not to insure, or are not insurable, as well as risks associated with items of an irreplaceable or priceless nature.

What insurance coverage does your health care facility need?

Insurance covers for Health Care Facilities fall broadly into three classes:

  • Property,
  • Liability, and
  • Other Benefits.

Within each class are many types of products, in total Catholic Church Insurances Limited offers in excess of 46 different insurance products.

In the Glossary of Insurance Products you will find explanations of insurance products most commonly used by Catholic Health Care Facilities. We have not included the more specialised insurance products but would be more than happy to discuss other products with you.

A good way to start working out which insurance you may require is to use the Insurance Products Checklist (PDF 24 KB) we have provided for you as you read through the Glossary of Insurance Products. You can simply tick against each product name whether you feel that insurance is important to you. Or if you prefer your Catholic Church Insurances Limited Account Executive will be happy to complete the checklist with you.

Know your risks

One of Catholic Church Insurances Limited's important services to Catholic Health Care Facilities is to assist you to identify and manage your risks regardless of their insurance status.

One of the most common and visible risks is that of fire. Whether from arson, equipment malfunction or just human error, the potential result can be total devastation, particularly where incapacitated persons are cared for. It would be easy to regard Catholic Church Insurances Limited's insurance products as your single loss control method, but consider for a moment how much better off you would be if the fire never happened.

You would not require alternative accommodation, normal activities would not be disrupted and employee, patient and public safety would not be put at risk.

What is risk management

Risk management is a systematic process of identifying and evaluating potential areas of risk which may cause you loss, and then selecting and implementing appropriate techniques for managing those exposures.

A simple evaluation of the potential consequences and the probability of loss can be undertaken by completing our Risk Management Checklist (PDF 24 KB). Your Catholic Church Insurances Limited Account Executive would be most happy to assist you.
